Electric Powertrains

Achieve Lower Emissions with Improved Power, Fuel Economy and Range

Electric powertrains function by receiving electricity from a charge point and storing the electricity in rechargeable batteries that power an onboard electric motor, turning the vehicle’s wheels. Compared to internal combustion vehicles, electric powertrains offer several benefits, including cleaner emissions, improved fuel economy and low-end torque, reduced maintenance and lower total cost of ownership.

As policymakers worldwide shift toward more stringent emissions regulations in the transportation sector, electric powertrains offer operators an intelligent solution to powering their existing and future fleets.

Topologies for Power Converters

Versatile circuit topologies can be found in power electronics for different applications. For conversion form, four categories can be identified:

DC/DC CONVERTER
DC/AC CONVERTER(INVERTER)
AC/DC CONVERTER(RECTIFIER)
AC/AC CONVERTER(CYCLOCONVERTER)

Aiming at reducing switching losses and EMI of power converters, many switching techniques are developed for the above types of converters so that high efficiency, small size, and lower weight can be achieved.

DC/DC CONVERTER
BUCK CONVERTER
BOOST CONVERTER
BUCK/BOOST CONVERTER
CUK CONVERTER
FORWARD CONVERTER (ISOLATED BUCK)
FLYBACK CONVERTER(ISOLATED BUCK/BOOST)
DC/AC CONVERTER
VOLTAGE-FED INVERTER
CURRENT-FED INVERTER
AC/DC CONVERTER

An AC/DC converter is typically used in a power electronics system as a front-end converter. A front-end converter must be friendly to the utility line, meaning a high-power factor, low input current THD (total harmonic distortion), and low EMI emission. Advanced AC/DC converters have been developed for single-phase and three-phase systems to meet increasingly strict regulations.

SINGLE-PHASE BOOST PFC RECTIFIER
THREE-PHASE DCM BOOST PFC RECTIFIER
THREE-PHASE BOOST PWM PFC RECTIFIER
THREE-PHASE BUCK PFC RECTIFIER

Motor Drive Control Issues

Many adjustable-speed drives (ASD) applications require medium- or high-bandwidth torque control to achieve adequate control performance. If a drive system can function as a controllable source of torque with fast dynamic response, it should be able to implement the desired motion control operation.
